When a technician says your fridge needs a new compressor, the next question is always how much it will cost. The honest answer is that it depends, and anyone who quotes a single price over the phone without seeing the fridge is guessing. This post explains what the cost is made up of, so that you can judge a quote and decide whether the repair is worth it.
First, make sure it really is the compressor
The compressor gets blamed for many faults it did not cause. A fridge that clicks and does not start is very often a worn start relay or overload protector, which are small, inexpensive parts. A fridge that is warm may have a blocked fan, an iced evaporator, a dirty condenser or a faulty thermostat. Before agreeing to a compressor replacement, ask the technician how they confirmed the compressor was the fault. A proper diagnosis includes testing the windings, checking the starting components and measuring the pressures.
What goes into a compressor replacement
A fridge compressor sits inside a sealed system, so replacing it is not like changing a part in a car. It involves several steps, and each one carries time and cost:
- Recovering the remaining refrigerant safely.
- Cutting out the old compressor and brazing in the new one.
- Replacing the filter drier, which should never be reused.
- Pressure testing the system and pulling a vacuum to remove moisture and air.
- Recharging the exact weight of refrigerant the fridge was designed for.
- Testing the fridge to confirm that it cools properly.
What the price depends on
The type and size of the fridge
A compressor for a small bar fridge is a very different part from one for a large double-door household fridge or a commercial display unit. Larger and commercial compressors cost more, and commercial equipment often needs more refrigerant and more testing.
The refrigerant
Fridges use different refrigerants, and the system must be recharged with the right one. Some are flammable and need specific equipment and training to handle safely. Availability and price of the gas also vary.

Parts availability
Compressors for popular household brands are usually easy to source. Older or less common models can mean waiting for a part or using an equivalent compressor. Genuine, quality compressors cost more than cheap imports, and the cheaper ones often fail sooner.
Labour and access
A fridge that is easy to reach is quicker to work on than one built into a unit or tucked into a corner. Commercial units on site, such as a cold room or a display fridge, may involve extra time and sometimes after-hours work.
Warranty
A reputable technician will guarantee the compressor and the work. Ask what the warranty covers and for how long, and make sure it is on the invoice. A cheap quote with no warranty is not cheap if the compressor fails again.
Repair or replace the fridge?
A compressor replacement is usually the most expensive repair a fridge needs, so it is worth weighing up. A few questions help:
- How old is the fridge? A fridge under about eight to ten years old, in good condition otherwise, is often worth repairing.
- How good is the rest of it? Worn seals, rust, a failing cabinet or ice problems make a big repair a poor investment.
- What would a comparable new fridge cost, and how efficient is it? A new fridge may use noticeably less electricity.
- Is it a commercial unit? Commercial fridges are built to be repaired, and a replaced compressor can give years more service.
- Is it a small or very cheap model? For a low-cost bar fridge, replacement is often the better option.
A useful rule of thumb is that if the repair costs more than around half the price of a comparable new fridge, it is time to think hard about replacing it. That is a guide, not a law, and it shifts with the age and quality of the unit.
How to get a fair quote
- Ask for the diagnosis in plain terms, and what was tested.
- Get the quote in writing, with parts, gas and labour shown.
- Ask what warranty comes with the compressor and the work.
- Ask whether a cheaper fix, such as a relay, has been ruled out.
- Be wary of a price quoted without anyone seeing the fridge.
